Stow away your tray table and fasten your seatbelts – you can now spend a night in an airport control tower that’s been turned into a luxury apartment.
Stockholm’s Arlanda Airport has teamed up with holiday rental company HomeAway to turn this disused control tower into a sky-high apartment for a one-of-a-kind experience.
Many an apartment project boasts about its panoramic views, but few can compare to this. Offering 360-degree views of the runways through the floor to ceiling windows, this 80-meter high apartment would be an aviation fanatic’s dream come true.
The interior design comes courtesy of Swedish multimedia artist, Cilla Ramnek who went for a minimalist 1960s style and a monochrome colour palette in keeping with the space.
Speaking to CNN, Ramnek said, “This is by far among the most fun environment I have ever worked with. I am inspired by the place itself with its special conditions and then the furnishing comes naturally.”
With the existing airport hotels constantly busy and probably less exciting, demand for the unique apartment looks set to be high. However, the airport is currently running a competition for lucky winners to spend the night there as part of a luxury experience.
Most of the products used to accessorise the apartment are available for sale within the airport and help create the unique style. Kjell-Åke Westin, Stockholm Arlanda’s Airport Director told CNN, “It feels great to be able to offer international guests the opportunity to experience this hidden secret at Stockholm Arlanda. At the same time, we see this as an opportunity to showcase what we have to offer here at Scandinavia's fastest growing airport.”
Far be it from us to ignore the chance of another airline pun – this might just be one of the biggest flights of fancy we’ve seen in apartment design in quite some time…
