Spring is well underway now in Australia, and as the warmer weather finally arrives, many around the country are gearing up for some spring cleaning. It is the time to seize the opportunity to get your home back into proper working order for the busy months ahead.

Similar to deep cleaning projects, giving your apartment a thorough spring cleaning is a great way to rid your home of dust and germs. Here is a simple checklist that will help leave your house shining from the inside out.

Stock up on cleaning supplies

Before you start spring cleaning, ensure you're stocked with your must-have cleaning supplies. Baking soda, white vinegar, and an all-purpose cleanser are essentials to clean nearly any spot in the apartment. You can also stock up on several sponges and a reusable spray bottle to make cleaning jobs more manageable.

Get organised by decluttering

Getting rid of useless clutter will help you quickly clear your apartment, open up your space, and give you a better idea of what needs to be deep-cleaned. You can gather all the items and label them properly to divide the things you need to throw away, donate, keep.

Dust all surfaces

Maintain the appearance and upkeep of your floors, furniture, blinds, and curtains by dusting all surfaces in your apartment. Dusting will also help clean the dirt, pollen, and dust mites that can irritate your nose and eyes.

Full wipe down of all windows and appliances

Wiping down your windows and appliances can help reduce the dust and fine particles circulating in the air, which could help with your allergies. When cleaning your windows, don't forget to wipe the screens to remove any dirt or mould.

Wash all linens and curtains

Washing rugs, curtains, and throw pillow covers make your apartments look fresh and new. To achieve total "spring cleaning," you can empty your linen closet and give everything inside a pass through your washing machine. This also reduces the spread of allergens, dust mites, and other contaminants.

Tidy up the bathroom

Scrub your shower and toilet, wash your shower curtain, organise all your drawers and cabinets and replace your toothbrush. To remove any soap scum or grime, use a sponge or towel and rinse with clean water when you're done.

Clean Your Kitchen

A kitchen can store any old residue from all your activities. Start by cleaning the tops and sides of appliances such as microwaves, refrigerators, and stove vents. Defrost the freezer and clean the inside of the fridge.

Additional but essential

If everything on this list is checked off, check if you need to replace the batteries in alarms and detectors (smoke/fire, particle, and carbon monoxide detectors). Spring cleaning is also an excellent time to put away winter clothing, replace HVAC air filters and spruce up the space with fresh flowers or a new green plant.

To keep it more manageable, make a list of tasks you wish you'd been able to do and plan to finish them up during your regular cleaning routine. Enjoy your freshly-cleaned house!
