Spring is officially here! Every year, as the first of September dawns, we welcome warmer weather, longer days, and a flourishing of greenery and flora. There is something simply refreshing about this time of year, and it is only fair that we want our homes to reflect the season of new beginnings.

Now that winter has ended, we can make do without the muted colours and ample layers. Spring is all about lightening and brightening up your space!

But, not to worry, re-decorating for the spring does not mean a complete transformation of your apartment. A few simple changes and additions are all you need to spruce up your home for the season. Here are five ways to do just that.

A spring clean

First and foremost, before you get started on any decorating, do a thorough and deep clean of your home. This may not be the most fun or glamorous part of the process, but it sure does you good.

As most of us cocoon in our homes, preserving heat and trying to stay warm in the winter, our homes may emerge into the spring rather cluttered. We may find strewn blankets much too thick for the spring on our sofas, empty candle jars, and a collection of dust across windowsills and other surfaces.

So, crack open your windows and let the fresh spring air cycle through your home. Take the time to declutter, pack any winter items away, and deep clean your home as a way to usher in this change in seasons. You will find that your home feels much newer and fresher without even needing to change the decor. They don’t call it spring cleaning for nothing.

Bring the flowers and greenery inside

What better way to welcome the springtime than by decorating your apartment with fresh flowers and greenery? It’s a no brainer! As Meryl Streep said in ‘The Devil Wears Prada,’ “Florals for spring? Groundbreaking.”

Sure, it’s the obvious choice. But, this way, you are able to bring spring into your home. It is such an easy way to spruce up your home for the season.

So, whether you choose to go for a fresh flower bouquet or a beautiful faux plant, adding greenery to your space is an easy way to freshen it up. Depending on the arrangement you choose, it can also add a pop of colour to your home.

To bring even more life into your apartment, consider decorating with food. A decorative bowl filled with fresh apples, bright yellow lemons, or a mixture of your favourite fruits and vegetables easily adds a natural pop of colour to your kitchen and dining spaces.

Springtime scents

In addition to a host of visual changes, consider elevating your apartment through scents. Reach for those floral or citrus scented smells to further the spring theme in your home. Be it candles, essential oils, or even specifically choosing fresh flowers with a sweeter and more lingering aroma, making your space smell like spring will add a sense of zen to your apartment.

This is an especially clever way to make your space feel more like spring when it’s still too cold outside to open your windows.

A change of colour

Spring is a time of renewal. The fresh blooms that pop up all around reflect that. So, why not take inspiration from nature for your own home decor?

Sprinkle in bright colours, pastels, natural hues, or even bold neons throughout your space as inspired by the blooming flowers and growing greenery. Incorporate these fresh pops of colours by swapping out your rug for one with fresh spring shades, adding fun throw pillows on your couch and chairs, or even changing your bedding.

With the weather now warming up, consider switching your bedding to a linen or percale material for a smoother and lighter feel. Keep the theme by opting for bedding with spring colours, or maybe a pretty floral motif.

Rugs have the ability to bring a room together seamlessly. They can also easily change the aesthetic of the space. Even if you have hardwood floors, a new area rug can easily give the room that extra spring flair.

Embrace your outdoor space

Now that the weather is warmer and the days are longer, you will surely like to make use of your outdoor spaces again. If your apartment has an outdoor area such as a balcony, then it may be worthwhile turning this space into a comfy spot to enjoy the fresh spring air in.

To give your outdoor space that spring vibe, you don’t need to have a full transformation. Simply adding some brightly coloured throw pillows or plants on side tables can elevate the space. How about hanging up some string lights to add even more colour to the space? Maybe bring out some candles in the evenings? Whatever it may be, make the most of your outdoor space. No balcony is too small to enjoy.

However, if you don’t have an outdoor space attached to your apartment, make sure you use those in your apartment building. Find out if you have a communal garden you can take part in, or simply enjoy any rooftop and outdoor amenities you may have access to. Anything to revel in that fresh spring air.
