Brunswick’s cool continues to proliferate with urban renewal project Jewell Station currently setting the bar high for socially-led residential design.

Brought to life as part of the upgrade to Jewell train station, the project comprises a collection of one, two and three bedroom residences.

The Barkly St apartments are the first of the project to be released and they’re also the first residences to have interiors designed by award-winning Clare Cousins Architects. Known more for their attention to detail with single residence projects, the studio embraced the opportunity to make a difference on a larger scale.

Says Clare, “We love well-designed, efficient space and with apartment living this is essential. Details are considered for practicality, durability and delight. We believe quality can be achieved across quantity but it requires a careful consideration of the finer details. The custom solid timber handles used throughout the apartments are one of our favourite features.”

These residences are light and airy, open plan yet intimate with a profusion of natural textures and materials throughout. Clearly, the way in which residents will live in these homes has been a core consideration.

Explains Clare, “The biggest difference between multi- residential developments such as Jewell Station and our single residential projects is not having the opportunity to collaborate directly with the end user. We approach this by considering how different people might inhabit the space and how we ourselves would occupy it. We consider how small daily rituals would unfold in a space, where are the keys kept? How would you entertain in an apartment or where would you do the washing?”

Resident wellbeing is a key factor in the design of Jewell Station. Barkly St features a rooftop garden in which to relax amongst plenty of lush plants and foliage and connect with neighbours. There are yoga spaces to soothe both body and mind. There’s even a bike workshop to ensure your environmentally friendly commute is always a smooth one and physical exercise is as easy to include in your daily life as possible.

Developer Neometro is celebrating 30 years of developing award-winning apartments this year, and with Jewell Station is continuing its commitment to raising apartment standards. Their vision for Jewell Station is to create a new precinct that supports the connectivity of new and existing members of the community, and in partnership with VicTrack, the project certainly puts the community at the heart of its amenities.

On the doorstep, you’ll find a host of free community benefits like the upgraded Upfield bike path that will have you cycling to the CBD in under 15 minutes, and the Jewell Precinct Park to relax and meet friends.

There’s public art built into the plan, with artist Fleur Summers recently winning the commission to create a piece, entitled ‘Making Sense’, specifically for the site. In a further community link, Brunswick Secondary School art students will be helping create the work.

The buzz of Brunswick’s local cafes, eateries, coffee shops and stores is renowned, with more cool spots popping up on a regular basis. Balance this by heading over to nearby Princes and Royal Parks for leafy tranquility.

Just 4km from the CBD this popular spot was ripe for a forward-thinking development group like Neometro to transform, and in the premium residences of Jewell Station, Brunswick now has an iconic example of effective urban rejuvenation.
