The global top ten skyscrapers have been announced, with Melbourne’s Australia 108 coming in at 7th place. Soaring an incredible 319-meters, this Fender Katsalidis designed skyscraper is the state’s tallest building.
The Emporis Skyscraper Award is the world’s most renowned prize for high-rise architecture and has been awarded internationally since 2000. An international jury of architectural experts selected the projects out of 300 skyscrapers completed in 2020, with the primary criteria being excellence in aesthetics and functional design.
Australia 108 is instantly recognisable thanks to its Starburst design on the facade that spans levels 70 and 71. The Commonwealth Star on the Australian flag was the primary design inspiration, with the Starburst symbolising the sense of community within the building.
Inside is the 2,800sqm Star Club residents’ amenities offering a world of entertainment and leisure backdropped by 360-degree panoramic views of the city, gardens and the bay. There are dual double-height full glass infinity pools, two state-of-the-art gyms, five sophisticated dining rooms, expansive lounge rooms, a reading room, a private cinema and a stunning sky garden with soaring ceilings.
Nicky Drobis, Director of Fender Katsalidis, had previously commented to AD Group that the Star Club was designed to create a genuine sense of community at the megatower, comprising 1,105 apartments. “The key objective for us when designing the Starburst was to create a civic-style environment that would help foster an authentic sense of connection among residents, like that of a town hall. It is humbling to see this being realised and residents embracing it.”
The 2020 Emporis Skyscraper Award winner was One Barangaroo in Sydney, designed by Bates Smart and WilkinsonEyre. Congratulations to the winner and all skyscrapers in the top ten.
