The ambitious $2.8 billion plans for Melbourne Square, including apartments with decadent interior design, expansive views across the beautiful cityscape, and a seemingly fantastical rooftop garden, have placed this development on a pedestal since its launch. But we’d like to take a moment to appreciate the project’s stellar landscaping plans that will bring a whole new European-style public park to Southbank.

The residential element of Melbourne Square – as attractive as the lifestyle opportunity it presents on its own is – is immeasurably enhanced by the lush, green park that surrounds it. Built where there once existed an old car park on a city-fringe block, the new outdoor space will occupy a huge total of 3,700 sqm, offering a diverse range of opportunities for leisurely enjoyment.

The space was designed by landscape architects Taylor Cullity Lethlean (TCL), known for their work at the Australian Garden in Cranbourne and Melbourne’s own Sidney Myer Music Bowl.

Managing Director of TLC, Perry Lethlean, said, “The park is inspired by Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens and qualities from other cities such as Paris, Berlin and Barcelona.”

The way the gardens have been designed allows residents of Melbourne Square to take full advantage of the natural setting. The two residential buildings, soaring 54 and 67 levels into the sky, will be connected by a network of green space that makes setting off and coming home an uplifting experience.

It’s already been confirmed that the parks and gardens will be some of the first elements of the project to be brought to life, so residents will be able to enjoy them as soon as they move in.

Included in the plans are generous promenades and European-style piazzas, which Lethlean suggested would “encourage the Italian tradition of promenading – taking an evening walk with family and friends.”

On such a walk through the parkland, you’ll come across water-lined steps set into a gently rising slope, lending the setting the appearance of an amphitheatre. Cascading water features are also included to create a calming atmosphere that transports you to somewhere more tropical than Melbourne, if even just for a moment.

For more activity, the buzzing outdoor terrace is the perfect place to bump into neighbours and meet some new faces. These spaces will also be used to host public events for the wider Southbank community, including markets and cultural activities. Immerse yourself or take a seat nestled among the greenery and people-watch for the afternoon.

Even when the piazza’s itinerary is bare, passersby and local residents are sure to flock to the lush parkland at Melbourne Square as they are welcomed at street level by a colourful display of flowers inspired by different parts of the world.

“We believe this public realm will draw people from all over Southbank, and also provide an important linkage from the CBD through the Arts Precinct to the Botanic Gardens,” commented Tan Sri Ong Leong Huat, CEO of Melbourne Square’s developer, OSK Property.

What Melbourne Square promises to bring to Southbank is more than just a collection of stunning apartments. It’s a rich dose of greenery set to break up the concrete pocket and give locals a park of their own to be proud of. TCL’s Lethlean suggested the park would give Southbank a “new green heart” and activate the suburb.

Summed up by OSK Property’s Huat, “At Melbourne Square, the qualities that make this city so admired internationally have been encapsulated within one impressive new address.”

The natural elements of Melbourne Square will tie in perfectly with Southbank’s additional 2.5Ha of green space being delivered by City of Melbourne. Construction is starting early 2018 and includes the Boyd Park concept plan just released to the public, located directly opposite the Melbourne Square site.

One bedroom apartments at Melbourne Square start from $471,700.
