AT A GLANCE:

  • New Brisbane Stadium, new National Aquatic Centre, major expansion of Queensland Tennis Centre and a dedicated Para-sport facility just some of the legacy infrastructure for Brisbane.
  • The Gabba to be used for cricket in 2032, before being transformed as a vibrant new entertainment and housing precinct, as a lasting legacy of the Games.
  • Brisbane Arena Priority Area to be moved to the vacant GoPrint site in Woolloongabba, and delivered by the private sector.
  • 2032 Delivery Plan sets the plan, now attention turns to delivering it.

The venues for Brisbane’s 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games have been revealed.

Brisbane's Victoria Park will be the site of a new 63,000-seat stadium for the Games, one that will rival the world’s best stadiums, as revealed by Queensland Premier David Crisafulli today. The stadium plans follow a 100-day independent review into venues, infrastructure, and transport for the Games, more than four years after Brisbane won Olympic hosting rights.

In a decision that has significant ramifications for the city, Victoria Park stadium will be home to the Lions and cricket after the Games.

The Gabba will continue to host AFL home games until then, before being demolished for residential development.

The Queensland Premier said time had run out to upgrade the Gabba, which had been his preferred venue, and that the only choice was to “rewind the clock four decades” to the Sport and Aquatic Centre or to invest in a new option, namely Victoria Park.

David said there was "no longer time" to upgrade the Gabba, adding the plan would deliver "for 2032 and beyond."

"It became a choice between the embarrassment of hosting the games at QSAC or a new stadium at Victoria Park," he said.

"In the end, the choice was clear.

"The Games must be held at a new stadium at Victoria Park."

Other Queensland regions receive green light

The Queensland Government has adopted a broader approach to hosting the 2032 Olympic Games, with events to be held across the state.

Rather than being solely the Brisbane Olympics, events will be held in the neighbouring regions of the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. It will be a "Queensland Games" given the spread from the south-east of the state all the way to Far North Queensland (FNQ).

As previously speculated, Rockhampton will host rowing events on the Fitzroy River.

Sailing events will be held in picturesque FNQ between Townsville and the Whitsunday Islands in a significant switch from the original plans voted upon by Olympic nations when awarding the Olympics to Brisbane in 2021.

Townsville will also host football along with Cairns, which will feature some basketball matches.

Should cricket feature in the Olympics, as appears likely, Cairns will also host some cricket matches along with Mackay, which currently hosts international matches, before a “swan song” at the Gabba.

Toowoomba will be the new home for equestrian events after a shift in plans for the Olympic Village, which will now be located at the Brisbane Showgrounds – the home of the popular Ekka show held each August.

Maryborough will host archery, while the Pat Rafter Tennis Centre in Tennyson will receive a significant upgrade, with a new 3,000-seat stadium built as a secondary court at the facility, along with 12 additional outside courts.

Greater Brisbane will benefit from new and upgraded Games infrastructure, including:

  • New Brisbane Stadium to be delivered at Victoria Park.
  • New National Aquatic Centre to be delivered at the site of Centenary Pool in Spring Hill.
  • Expanded Queensland Tennis Centre to include a new permanent 3000-seat showcourt and 12 new match courts.
  • Transformed RNA Showgrounds with an upgraded Main Arena and Athlete Village, which will be converted to permanent housing after the Games.
  • Upgraded Chandler Sport Precinct to include a dedicated Para-sport Facility.
  • New Redland Whitewater Centre will be delivered within the future Birkdale Community Precinct.
  • Brisbane International Shooting Centre upgraded to increase capacity of the indoor range.
  • Logan and Moreton Indoor Sports Centres built to address the growing demand for indoor courts in some of the fastest growing areas of Queensland.

Property market to benefit

The 2032 Olympics will likely transform Brisbane's property market, causing significant growth and change over the next decade.

Historically, the Olympic Games have spurred substantial economic growth and property price increases in host cities. For example, property prices in Barcelona surged by 130% in the five years leading up to the 1992 Games, and London saw house prices increase by 26% after being awarded the 2012 Olympics. With these examples in mind, Brisbane is likely to experience a similar trend in the coming years.
