Central Park Tower has officially become the world’s tallest residential building ever, reaching a gigantic 1,550 feet in Manhattan.

The construction milestone means the skyscraper has reached its full height of around 472.4 metres and takes the title for the world's tallest residential building from 432 Park Avenue, which towers at 1,398 feet (426 metres).

Situated just a few blocks from Central Park at 225 West 57th Street, residences are set to occupy the higher levels of the tower, with a hotel underneath and a flagship seven-storey Nordstrom store in the base.

In total, the skyscraper will accommodate 179 homes that start from the 32nd floor of the building. These will range from two to eight bedrooms and 1,435 square feet (133 square metres) to over 17,500 square feet (1626 square metres).

As well as luxurious interiors, residents will also have access to an array of lavish amenities organised by the in-house Central Park Club.

Among these is a large outdoor area that includes a swimming pool, gardens and dining areas. While inside, another swimming pool is accompanied by a private dining room and a grand ballroom, along with conference suites, children's play areas and a screening room.

This impressive structure understandably dwarfs the tallest residential buildings found in Australia. Melbourne holds the title of the tallest building of its kind in the country — and the southern hemisphere. Southbank tower Australia 108 will soar 1046 feet (319 metres) into the sky when its construction is complete in 2020.

Much of the development’s 1100 apartments have been completed, but the penthouses atop of the 100-story tower have yet to be finished.

In Sydney, Greenland Centre Sydney by BVN and Woods Bagot is set to become the tallest tower of its kind in the city. Standing at 771 feet (235 metres) and located at 115 Bathurst Street, the $700 million tower will contain 481 residences over 67 storeys.

It will match the height of the Spire London project, which is also set to become Western Europe’s tallest residential tower.

In the north, Brisbane Skytower holds the record as the city’s tallest building. The residential tower includes 1,138 one and three-bedroom apartments as well as sub-penthouse and penthouse apartments across its 90 floors.

Reaching 887 feet (270.5 metres), it is still some way off New York’s Central Park.
