Canberran developer DOMA is transforming the site of The Alexander and Albemarle buildings in Woden, originally built in the mid-1960s, into a new residential area. Welcome to A&A — a collection of expansive and textural warehouses and loft-style apartments.

“The A&A development is truly a first for Canberra,” DOMA’s Managing Director, Jure Domazet, says. “The buildings are unique, featuring a striking concrete façade and have been built to last.”

Starting around mid $300k, many local owner-occupiers have already seized the opportunity to buy here, and there’s only a small range of homes left for sale.

“This unique design had never been offered in the Canberra market before,” Shane Radnell, Director of Residential at Colliers International says. “It resonated so strongly with the local market, we had no need to look further than our backyard for the lucky homeowners.”

Half of the development sold in the first month, becoming the fastest selling development in Canberra, 2018.

“There is still the opportunity for some lucky interstate buyers to tap into this development and find comfort in the strong local occupier ownership within the building to underpin their investment.”

DOMA has enlisted award-winning design studio Cox Architecture and builders from Bloc to bring this project to completion by early 2020. The impressive concrete structure of the original towers will be preserved and repurposed for lower-density urban living in the heart of the Woden town centre.

Downstairs, smaller annexes will make way for a new retail and commercial thoroughfare and residential parking set around a central and activated landscaped garden. Beautiful apartment amenities such as a luxurious swimming pool and communal facilities will sit atop the lower floor structures.

Among the new retail and dining outlets, there are plans for a gastro-pub and state-of-the-art gymnasium. General Manager of Development at DOMA, Gavin Edgar, says the unique design of the building created the opportunity for large public spaces to occupy the area between the buildings. “This has enabled a high level of retail and commercial activation which will draw people through the site and provide residents with an open outlook.”

Earlier this year, Westfield Woden underwent a $21 million redevelopment. The central focus has been on the dining precinct, located on Bradley Street adjoining Westfield Woden’s HOYTS Cinema complex. Six premier restaurants officially launched on the 18th of April and are already attracting more and more visitors from all over Canberra.

The exciting mix of eateries will complement pre-existing crowd favourites — such as Grill’d, Rashays, and San Churro — located in the shopping centre’s food court.

Newcomers include modern sushi train Sushi Musa, Espresso Warriors X Sugar Rush café, as well as Chinese restaurant Golden Child and Vietnamese bar Northeast. In addition, Fenway Public House offers traditional pub-style fare while families can enjoy the friendly atmosphere at The Bavarian.

Featuring indigenous artworks and urban street art from Canberran artists, alongside rich natural textures and abundant landscaping, Bradley Street has become a warm and welcoming dining staple for the local community.

The redevelopment includes upgrades to Westfield Woden’s food court and amenities, including new seating options to cater to all customers and the incorporation of phone charger and power outlet stations, ambient lighting and indoor plantings.

In Woden, residents live in proximity to a wide range of premium Canberran schools. Chifley Preschool and Lyons Early Childhood School to St Peter and Paul’s Primary School and Canberra College are all within easy walking or driving distance from the project’s doorstep.
